FED:Gen Gillespie says some don't get it

FED:Gen Gillespie says some don't get it

CANBERRA, April 14 AAP - Army chief Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie says Defence includes
a small number of people who just "don't get it" and he will strive to beat their abhorrent
conduct out of the organisation.

General Gillespie said 99.9 per cent of personnel were out doing fabulous work and

didn't deserve to be thrown in with the few people who caused the recent grief in the
organisation.

"There are a few in our organisation who don't get it," he told reporters.

"But we are a people organisation and that is likely to be the case for the next 100
years of our history where from time to time people won't get it and they will cause us
some grief and embarrassment.

General Gillespie said what had been forgotten in recent days was the undoubted quality
of the defence force demonstrated by their outstanding performance in disaster relief
in Australia and operations in Afghanistan and East Timor.

He said he agreed wholeheartedly with Defence Minister Stephen Smith.

"The sort of activity that occurred which put us in the position that we are in is
abhorrent and is the sort of thing that I have been and will continue to strive to beat
out of our organisation," he said.

Defence Minister Stephen Smith has now commissioned six inquiries into the culture
at defence following the scandal at the Australian Defence Force Academy in which one
cadet filmed himself having sex with a female cadet and webcast it to his mates in another
room.

General Gillespie said the defence force drew its people from the community so it could
be expected that from time to time some of its worst traits would be seen in the force.

He said Defence still deserved to be held accountable and reminded of shortcomings.

But he said the army of today is not the army of 10 years ago.

"We have moved dramatically in a cultural sense," he said.

"What these reviews will do is tell us how far we have moved ... what we haven't done
as effectively as we think we should and they will tell us how far we have got to go and
I am pretty comfortable with that."

NSW:Flooding affects more areas in NSW

SYDNEY, Dec 27 AAP - Almost 20 properties have been evacuated in central western NSW,
with about 300 people expected to be cut off by rising floodwaters later in the day.

At Eugowra, the Mandagery Creek is expected to peak at 9.3 metres on Monday afternoon
- higher than the original peak of 9.05 metres about 1.30 (AEDT) on Monday morning.

State Emergency Services (SES) spokesman Phil Campbell has told AAP it's not known
yet when the evacuated people can return to their homes.

The SES has also warned that people in Urbanville in the state's northeast could be
isolated later on Monday.

Up to 300 people could be cut off, with their isolation lasting until the rain subsides.

There also are flood warnings in place for Lismore and Kyogle in the state's northeast.

Roads have been closed at Canowindra although there haven't been any evacuations.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is expecting more heavy rain on Monday from Lismore
to Tweed Heads. It's issued a warning of moderate to major flooding.

In the south, an evacuation warning has been issued for a small number of properties
in South Hay with the Murrumbidgee River expected to peak at 8.5 metres on Monday.

The levee at South Hay is only 9.0 metres at its lowest point and the SES says a safety
factor of 0.5 metres is necessary.

It says residents in Lang Street should prepare themselves for the unlikely but possible
occurrence of flooding above floor level.

It also warns that if this happens homes may become a refuge for vermin, snakes and spiders.

Meanwhile, on Lord Howe Island the BoM has warned that heavy rainfall and gale force
winds are expected as a low pressure system passes close to the island on Monday.

Rain and winds are expected to increase during the morning, with peak wind gusts exceeding
90km/h and possible localised flash flooding.

Other parts of NSW are still recovering from the worst flooding in decades, caused
by heavy rain through December.

There are 49 natural disaster zones currently declared by the NSW government.

Fed: Bradfield wide open as Sinodinos declines political career

Fed: Bradfield wide open as Sinodinos declines political career

By Kate Hannon, National Political Editor

CANBERRA, Aug 26 AAP - The field of potential Liberal candidates to succeed Brendan
Nelson is wide open after John Howard's former chief of staff, Arthur Sinodinos, announced
he would not seek preselection.

The NSW Liberal Party is yet to call for nominations for preselection, but Mr Sinodinos
on Wednesday confirmed he would stay out of politics.

Meanwhile, it looks likely that the Liberals' main opponents in Dr Nelson's seat of
Bradfield on Sydney's well-heeled north shore will be the Australian Greens and a likely
raft of independents.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd confirmed on Wednesday that Labor would not run a candidate
in the by-election for the seat.

Dr Nelson had been expected to retire at the next election due in late 2010 but announced
on Tuesday he would quit at the end of September this year.

Mr Sinodinos said in a statement on Wednesday morning, issued through the NSW Liberal
Party, that his reasons for not standing were personal.

Mr Sinodinos worked for Mr Howard in opposition in the late 1980s and for nine years
as his chief of staff in government before he quit in 2006 to work in banking.

"I know the sacrifices involved in a serious political career, having served at the
highest levels of government for an extended period," he said.

The decision leaves a veritable Melbourne Cup field of potential candidates, with Simon
Berger, a senior adviser to Dr Nelson, seen as a prominent contender.

Last week, Dr Nelson told his local newspaper, the North Shore Times, that the preselection
of his replacement was up to the party, but if Mr Berger was interested he would do an
outstanding job.

Other possible candidates include Killara barrister and grazier Paul Blanch, research
fellow at the Institute of Public Affairs Tom Switzer, and Julian Leeser, executive director
of the Menzies Research Centre.

Bradfield is the safest metropolitan Liberal electorate in the country, held by a margin
of 13.5 per cent.

Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull said on Tuesday the by-election, expected to be
in November, would be a test of the federal government's economic management and the performance
of the state Labor government.

Mr Rudd said there was no point in Labor wasting money by running a candidate in a
by-election it had no chance of winning.

"It is a rock-solid, blue-ribbon Liberal seat in the northern part of Sydney," Mr Rudd said.

"If you stand the Labor Party in by-elections like this it costs the Labor Party lots
of money, and we'd much rather conserve our resources for other purposes."

Qld: Court clears way for Ferguson trial

Queensland's highest court has handed down a landmark ruling that prominent people
.. like convicted pedophile DENNIS FERGUSON .. can get a fair trial.

The Court of Appeal in Brisbane has overturned a decision made last month by District
Court Judge HUGH BOTTING .. who ordered a permanent stay of proceedings against 60-year-old
FERGUSON.

In a written judgment handed down this morning before a packed courtroom .. the three
judges of the Court of Appeal unanimously found Judge BOTTING had erred in ruling pretrial
publicity would prevent FERGUSON receiving a fair trial.

FERGUSON now has until Tuesday to surrender to police or face a warrant for his arrest
over allegations he sexually assaulted a five-year-old girl at her home at Dalby west
of Brisbane .. in November 2005.

Attorney-General KERRY SHINE .. who launched the appeal .. says it reaffirms the confidence
people can have in the Queensland justice system.

Opposition Leader LAWRENCE SPRINGBORG says the decision's a relief .. given other high-profile
cases due to come before the courts in coming months.

It's unknown when FERGUSON will face trial but his barrister PAUL SMITH indicated he
will immediately apply for bail.

Police can't confirm if Ferguson is in custody yet.

Fed: Disaster if visa extended to transport industry: union

Fed: Disaster if visa extended to transport industry: union

CANBERRA, Aug 28 AAP - There would be disastrous consequences if the 457 visa was extended
to the transport industry, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) says, following revelations
three foreign workers died after being exploited under the scheme.

The 457 visa scheme was implemented to allow employers to recruit from overseas to
fill skilled positions that can't be filled within Australia.

But employers are breaching the strict conditions of the visas, including putting workers
in jobs they are not trained for, ignoring safety standards and deducting accommodation
and meal expenses directly from wages, Fairfax reports.

A university-trained Filipino farm supervisor was thrown off the back of a truck and
killed on an Northern Territory cattle station in June.

Two days earlier, a Chinese logger died north of Brisbane when a dead tree fell and crushed him.

In the third death in March, Filipino stonemason Wilfredo Navales was crushed to death
by two slabs of granite at his workplace north of Perth.

In all cases the men had complained that they were doing work which they were not skilled
to perform.

The TWU says the report is alarming and shows the Howard government must ensure the
457 visa scheme is not extended to the transport industry.

"It's now become apparent that this visa is poorly regulated and downright dangerous,"

senior official Mark Crosdale said in a statement.

"If the same easily exploitable foreign labour was brought over here to drive trucks,
there would be disastrous consequences.

"You simply can't bring over cheap workers to drive 50-tonne trucks and not expect
carnage. Vulnerable drivers are dangerous drivers."

Qld: Bells will have ears ringing

People in Brisbane may wonder about the ringing in their ears this afternoon .. as
handbell enthusiasts from around the world gather for a mass handbell concert.

It will take two and a half thousand tuned handbells .. a choir and a didgeridoo to
perform the composition called Night .. in today's closing concert of the International
Handbell Symposium .. held in Brisbane this week.

Night was written especially for the symposium by Australian composer MATTHEW ORLOVICH
.. and was inspired by JUDITH WRIGHT'S poem of the same title.

DREW SULLIVAN from the Handbell Society of Australasia says handbells .. brass bells
on handles .. are individually pitched one bell per note over a chromatic scale .. like
the notes on a piano.

Today's concert involves hundreds of bell ringers aged from five to 85 years old.
