Qld: Bells will have ears ringing
People in Brisbane may wonder about the ringing in their ears this afternoon .. as
handbell enthusiasts from around the world gather for a mass handbell concert.
It will take two and a half thousand tuned handbells .. a choir and a didgeridoo to
perform the composition called Night .. in today's closing concert of the International
Handbell Symposium .. held in Brisbane this week.
Night was written especially for the symposium by Australian composer MATTHEW ORLOVICH
.. and was inspired by JUDITH WRIGHT'S poem of the same title.
DREW SULLIVAN from the Handbell Society of Australasia says handbells .. brass bells
on handles .. are individually pitched one bell per note over a chromatic scale .. like
the notes on a piano.
Today's concert involves hundreds of bell ringers aged from five to 85 years old.
