Fed: Government backs push for super stock exchange: report

The HOWARD Government has reportedly initiated high-level talks with the Singaporean
and Hong Kong governments to create a regional stock exchange and bond market.

The report is in the Australian Financial Review.

The paper says Canberra appears to have switched its focus to integration with Singapore
and Hong Kong after launching a push to make Australia a financial centre.

The Minister for Financial Services, JOE HOCKEY, says the Government is strongly behind
Australia's integration with key regional markets.

The paper says Mr HOCKEY recently initiated a range of meetings and working groups
to advance this objective.

Mr HOCKEY says the former head of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission,
ALAN CAMERON has been engaged by the financial centre promotion body AXXIS to work on
harmonisation of the region's financial regulation.

And, he says he has spoken to the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, LEE HSIEN LOONG,
about it and Australia is sending people to Singapore.
