Fed; Int'l Foreign Ministers already approached about cup ban

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER has already approachedsome of his international counterparts about a collective ban on World Cup cricket matchesin Zimbabwe.

But Mr HOWARD says the federal government will not prevent the Australian cricket teamfrom going to Zimbabwe because it would be unfair to the players and fans.

A controversy is boiling in the cricketing world over the International Cricket Council'sdecision to allow six World Cup matches to go ahead in Zimbabwe -- despite the parlousstate of that country's political and economic situation.

Mr HOWARD says he spoke to Mr DOWNER this morning about the matter.

The prime minister says Mr DOWNER's already been in touch with the foreign ministersof some other countries to see if they can persuade the International Cricket Councilto change its mind.
